Interview for UM and UKM Medicine Faculty (updated)

Assalamualaikum.
So maybe a year from now ada yang akan buat 'research' from blog to blog sebab nak prepare for some interview.
So here I am :)
Ceh. Hope my writings will help.

Actually adalah jugak apply UPM for medic, but this year most of my friends and myself takde pun yang dapat panggilan untuk interview(iv). So maybe they will consider only for those who choose UPM as their first choice kot. I'm not sure about this so maybe nanti boleh confirmkan dengan pihak UPM :)

1. UM

Mula-mula siapa yang apply dan layak akan dipanggil untuk UMAT yakni University of Malaya Acceptance Test [Got infos from some of my juniors- now the test is called BMAT and you have to pay certain amount of money to take the test ]. Cuma sesiapa yang apply untuk Fakulti Perubatan je yang akan dipanggil untuk ujian ni. Kitaorang  diberitahu by e-mail and dia sertakan link untuk paper UMAT tahun sebelumnya as reference. So bolehlah try jawab those question within the time limit. Ada 3 paper and kesemua paper tu dijawab secara berterusan without break in between those. Ada paper yang test basic scientific knowledge from what you have learnt during STPM/Asasi/Matrics. Ada paper yang akan test logical reasoning and it's kinda like an IQ test. Lagi satu paper adalah essay.

So dalam masa dua minggu or so dipanggil pulak untuk ditemuduga. Tempat interview diadakan di Exam Hall Univ. Malaya.

Haritu aku menunggu dalam salah satu dewan peperiksaan yang wujud kat situ. Seorang calon akan ditemuduga dalam masa 10 minit sahaja! Fuh, siap ada timer kot. I got assigned to Room 2. Panel penemuduga masa tu adalah 2 Chinese professors. One from Pharmacology and another one from Internal Medicine.

Nyaris je aku nak bagi salam masa nak masuk bilik tu, Haha. Soalan dia sangatlah random and aku rasa dia nak tengok the candidates' reaction and your common knowlegde+common sense. And they have no fixed question pun untuk every candidate except for the 'Tell me about yourself'. So ini antara soalan yang aku dapat dalam masa 10 minutes tu.

• Tell me about yourself
• What's your interest

And since I've mentioned that I love to read and sometimes I write. So the next question;

• What kind of book do you read and what's your favourite

Aku ada mention lagi yang I do read novels and I love Jodi Picoult because she wrote story that revolves around medical issue and it involves law too.

• Can you please tell us what's the story like?

And I've chose to tell them about My Sisters' Keeper. About the designer baby issue and how the sister doesn't want to donate her kidney  to her older sister who suffered from leukaemia and ends up filing a lawsuit for her parents. The panels said that since I've brought up the ethical issue ...

• What is your opinion on peoples who wants to buy sperm/ovum from another people to conceive baby?
• The local current issue
• The international current issue

And habis...

And yeah, they didn't even take a peek at my certificates.

2. UKM

This time aku dapat sesi petang pulak. And the last session for the whole interview. Interview kat UKM dijalankan dekat Bangunan Praklinikal, PPUKM. Since tu bangunan yang agak baru so there's no picture of it on google (lols).

And again semua calon akan dikumpulkan dalam dewan peperiksaan for registration and such. Dan akan dipanggil step by step untuk ditemuduga. Mula-mula tunggu kat dewan peperiksaan. Then sebahagian akan dibawa ke bilik menunggu di tempat lain. Di sini kitaorang diberikan seorang satu huruf dari A sampai H. Aku dapat huruf E so maksudnya aku dapat bilik E. Bila orang kat bilik E sebelum kau dah habis then the next E will be called. Pehe dok? Hehe.

Lepastu kena tunggu lagi depan bilik E tuh. Iv kat UKM ni pun sama ikut panel dia nak soal apa. And so bilik E ni pun set timer untuk iv 10 minit je.

So kalini I've got two Malay professors. Unlike UM, they didn't get to introduce themselves but they focused solely on the candidate. So soalan yang aku dapat;

• Introduce yourself
• You are from PASUM, so why don't you just further your studies at UM?
• Why do you choose to be a doctor?
• Why do you want to get yourself enrolled in UKM?
• What if you failed to get into UM/UKM/UiTM medicine faculty?

Aku pernah baca somewhere on the Internet yang kalau dapat soalan cenggini, show that you are very passionate about studying medicine and kalau boleh jangan kata yang korang have other courses in mind. Aku jawab yang maybe I'll further my studies at private Unis. Tetiba panel tu tanya pulak which Uni. Aku dengan spontan tercakap Perdana University sebab baru-baru ni aku ada usha satu program kat situ yang linked with RCSI.

Tetiba dia tanya balik apahal nak masuk situ sedangkan Uni tu agak baru. Then dia tanya what is the most prestigious private Med school kat Malaysia. Aku idok ler tau tak terfikir langsung nak research pasal private uni ni. Panel kata IMU lah jawapannnya. 

• How the UKM Medicine Faculty conducted the learning process?

At least you must know about PBL (Problem Based Learning) and stuff. Do some research from the UKM website.

• Explain the syllabus used in UKM Medicine Faculty

Kalau soalan ni mention yang UKM practises Integrated Organ System (lebih kurang cenggini kot), means this sem akan belajar Cardiovascular System so you'll learn all the anatomy, physiology, the diseases from heart and so on

• Your idol in medicine field
• Do you watch medical drama? Do you think that the situation will be the same when you will start working?

For this question aku just cakap yang pernahlah masa sekolah dulu I've watched House and I bet there must be some differences between the US and Malaysia healthcare system. Aku pun cakap yang some parts in the drama focuses on the doctors' private life so I don't get a clear picture about that.

Panel tu tolong aku and dia kata yang sometimes medical drama are just irrational because they will do everything. Maksudnya dia bantai semua cases O&G ke, Paediatric ke, Oncology ke.

then my 10 minutes was up and out I go.

And UKM ni ikut panel jugak, kalau dia soal in BM then kita jawab in BM. Kalau English pun cenggitu jugak.

Iv kat sini dia adalah jugak usha certificates aku. Tapi dalam 8 helai yang pertama je. Masa lepas dia tengok Sijil MUET aku tu yang terus dia nak test English aku sebab sebelum tu dia tanya dalam Bahasa Melayu je.

Jujur aku cakap macam I've lied to the panel because I don't speak fluent English. Mesti expectation dia melangit masa tengok sijil tu tapi runtuh bila dengar aku bercakap. Hahahaha. Bab itu aku ngaku lah yang writing aku yang tolong aku untuk score MUET.

And I've done my part for the iv with Allah's help. Am hoping for the best, praying for the best.

Updated : Alhamdulillah, I will be pursuing Medicine at Universiti Malaya! Tak expect pun sebenarnya sebab masa iv jelas terpampang kot yang aku nervous. Tapi alhamdulillah Allah letakkan aku kat situ. Terima kasih buat yang mendoakan and all the best :)
